BELEM, Brazil (Flux Daily) — California Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed his shock and disappointment over the decision of eight senators who have chosen to side with Republicans to bring an end to the ongoing government shutdown. Speaking during an interview at the COP30 UN Climate Conference in Brazil, Newsom warned about the alarming changes brought about by President Donald Trump’s approach to politics. I'm stunned that, in the face of this invasive species that is Donald Trump, who’s completely changed the rules of the game, we’re still playing by the old rules of the game,” Newsom stated.
The group of defectors included seven Democrats and one independent senator, which Newsom categorically termed as a “surrender” rather than a deal. The government shutdown, the longest in history, has resulted in severe disruptions nationwide, including missed paychecks and food aid stoppages. Newsom condemned the actions of his peers, labeling their compromises as a “capitulation” that betrays hardworking Americans.
Newsom further noted his commitment to countering Trump’s political maneuvers through strong legislative actions, which reflect a divergence from the compromise sought by some members of the Senate. Newsom's remarks underscore a growing divide within the Democratic Party regarding strategies for dealing with both Trump’s administration and the ongoing challenges posed by government issues.
