LOUISVILLE, Ky. — With temperatures plummeting this past weekend, a Kentucky farm family faced an urgent situation when a newborn calf was discovered struggling against the cold. The Sorrell family quickly intervened, bringing the calf into their home to keep it warm and safe.
After being fed and dried off, the playful calf found a cozy spot on the couch alongside the Sorrell children. Macey Sorrell, the children's mother, captured the heartwarming moment in photos that quickly made waves on social media.
The newborn calf, born amidst single-digit temperatures, was initially found by Tanner Sorrell, who noticed her suffering in the frigid weather. She was just frozen. Her umbilical cord looked like a popsicle, Macey remarked.
To prevent a repeat of last year's tragedy, where they lost another calf to frostbite, the Sorrells acted swiftly this time, bringing the baby inside for warmth. When we brought her in, she had ice on her. The afterbirth was still on her, I had to wipe all that off,” said Macey.
Using a blow dryer, they carefully warmed up the calf, ensuring she felt comfortable and cared for. Soon, she was relaxed on the couch, cuddling with the children, and even received a name from their son Gregory—Sally, after a character from his favorite movie.
The Sorrells, who manage a herd of around thirty cows, routinely rescue animals in precarious situations. The next morning, Sally was joyfully reunited with her mother, much to everyone's relief. Macey expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and admiration from those touched by their story, stating, It’s just part of what you do. This incident serves as a reminder of the compassion that lies at the heart of farming families during rough weather.
