French President Emmanuel Macron is safe following reports of explosions in central Damascus on Tuesday morning, the Elysee Palace confirmed.
Macron, in the Syrian capital to hold talks with his counterpart Ahmed al-Sharaa, reportedly did not hear any blasts while en route to the presidential palace. Security sources said the attacks were caused by two explosive devices, wounding several people.
Video footage on social media shows a vehicle near a hotel ablaze, with smoke rising from the Four Seasons Hotel on Shoukry al‑Quowatly. BBC Verify found the blasts about 125 m from the site.
Despite the violence, the Elysee Palace said Macron continues his visit as planned and will travel to Turkey for the NATO summit afterwards.
Macron’s arrival in Syria on Monday evening marked the first trip by an EU leader since the 24‑year Assad regime fell. Earlier this month a bomb blast at a crowded café in Damascus killed nine people and injured 22.
