BOSTON (AP) — A fishing vessel that went missing off the coast of Massachusetts was carrying a crew of seven, reported a state senator. The Coast Guard initiated a search and rescue operation early Friday after receiving an emergency alert from the 72-foot Lily Jean, approximately 25 miles off Cape Ann.
During the search, authorities found a debris field and recovered one unresponsive individual from the water, along with an empty life raft. The rescue efforts have been ongoing into the evening.
Republican State Senator Bruce Tarr confirmed that there were seven individuals on board the vessel. The Lily Jean, its captain Gus Sanfilippo, and his crew gained recognition from a 2012 History Channel episode of Nor’Easter Men, showcasing the perilous fishing conditions in New England.
Captain Sanfilippo, a fifth-generation commercial fisherman from Gloucester, is noted for his expertise in navigating the treacherous waters of Georges Bank. His crew worked tirelessly, often fishing for days at a time for species such as haddock, lobster, and flounder.
Vito Giacalone, head of the Gloucester Fishing Community Preservation Fund, expressed heartache at the news, recounting his long-standing friendship with Sanfilippo and his impact on the local fishing community. “He did well for himself. I was proud of him,” he said, emphasizing the weight of loss felt by those who knew the captain well.
Inclement weather during the search — including high winds reaching 27 mph and frigid water temperatures — has raised concerns about the safety of fishing operations in the wintry Atlantic. Gloucester Council President Tony Gross described the ongoing situation as a “huge tragedy for this community,” as families grapple with uncertainty and potential loss.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed her sorrow, stating, “I am praying for the crew, and my heart goes out to their loved ones and all Gloucester fishing families during this awful time.” As search efforts continue, the coastal community remains hopeful yet apprehensive about the outcome.
