US Senator Lindsey Graham Dead After Brief Illness
“US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has died following a brief and sudden illness” – the senator’s office confirmed the death on Saturday evening. The former Senate veteran, elected in 2002, was a key voice on foreign policy and a staunch supporter of President Trump.
Graham had just returned from Kyiv, where he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. A video of the meeting, captured on Friday, was among the last public appearances he made before his sudden demise.
Trump tweeted that Graham was a “true American patriot”, and the senator had previously defended U.S. support for Ukraine – arguing that weakness in Ukraine could be felt in Taiwan and calling for robust sanctions against Russia.
While some critics noted differences between Graham and Trump during partisan debates, the senator ultimately became one of the former president’s most ardent backers, citing his border policy, the strike on Soleimani and conservative judicial appointments.
Graham’s death leaves a void in the Senate’s foreign policy ranks and prompts questions about the future direction of U.S. support for Ukraine amid ongoing tensions with Russia.
