The White House has stated that its meeting with Anthropic, an AI firm currently embroiled in legal disputes with the US Department of Defense, was 'productive and constructive'. This discussion took place shortly after the company revealed its new AI tool, Claude Mythos, which claims to outperform humans in various cyber-security tasks.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei met with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, as reported by Axios. The meeting is noteworthy, coming two months after the White House labeled the firm a 'radical left, woke company'.
Although Anthropic did not provide comments on the meeting, the conversation around the Claude Mythos tool centered on its potential capabilities in identifying vulnerabilities in legacy code and its ability to autonomously exploit known bugs.
This AI advancement has garnered attention from government officials, as a handful of companies have been given access to the technology. Amodei has previously expressed that the company is eager to collaborate with government, which is now considered essential given the strategic value of its technology.
The discussion included potential collaboration while balancing the need for safety in advancing AI innovations. The relationship between Anthropic and the current administration has evolved significantly from previous negative rhetoric aimed at the firm.
In March, Anthropic initiated legal action against the Pentagon after receiving a 'supply chain risk' designation—which historically referred to the technology as insecure for government use. Despite court challenges, the functionality of Anthropic's tools continues to be utilized within various government sectors.
However, previous conflicts have surfaced, particularly with former President Trump, who commanded all government agencies to halt using Anthropic's services due to alleged 'radical left ideology'. As of the latest reports, even amidst the discord, there seems to be a notable thawing of relations as the White House engages with the firm on future collaborations.
