Cinemas in South Africa will not be showing the documentary about US First Lady Melania Trump that is expected to be released worldwide soon.

The South African distributor Filmfinity has decided against the release, as stated by its head of sales and marketing in quotations reported by various media sources like the New York Times and News24. The reasons behind the distributor's decision remain ambiguous.

The film, titled 'Melania,' lacks any promotion on the major cinema chains' websites in South Africa. An independent cinema in Cape Town reported being instructed not to list the film.

Deteriorating relations between the US and South Africa over the last year are noted to have played a role in this decision.

The documentary includes a significant investment from Amazon, reportedly around $40 million for the rights, and an additional $35 million allocated for marketing to elevate the film's profile ahead of its release.

Thobashan Govindarajulu, from Filmfinity, confirmed that the decision was prompted by 'recent developments' and referred to the 'current climate' without providing further clarification.

Inquiries from news outlets to Filmfinity for more information have gone unanswered, reinforcing the mystery surrounding the non-release of the film.

This decision continues a pattern of strained diplomatic ties since Donald Trump's presidency, marked by controversial claims and actions regarding South Africa.
