KENNER, La. — The once vibrant taquerias and eateries that colored the streets of Kenner have fallen silent, with many Hispanic business owners shutting their doors amidst a federal immigration enforcement blitz. Carmela Diaz, owner of Taqueria La Conquistadora, expresses her heartbreak over the lack of customers and employees fearful of leaving their homes.
This site of intense working-class Hispanic settlement has witnessed a rapid decline in economic activity thanks to recent crackdowns aiming for substantial arrests. Residents and business owners alike are left scrambling in the wake of federal operations that have spread across various cities including Los Angeles and Chicago.
“There were days we didn’t sell anything. That’s why I made the decision to close the business,” Diaz laments, after years of establishing her presence in the community. The Hispanic population, a significant component of Kenner's identity, has surged since Hurricane Katrina as they helped in the rebuilding efforts, making up about 30% of the town's residents.
In recent operations led by the Department of Homeland Security, federal vehicles have been fanning out to enforce immigration laws, raising anxiety among community members. Videos circulating on social media show agents detaining individuals outside local businesses, further exacerbating fears within the Hispanic community.
On High Alert
Business leaders have expressed their feelings of vulnerability. At the same time, officials like DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin state that the operations focus on removing violent offenders and assuring public safety, although the impacts on the immigrant community appear severe.
As the crackdown continues, concern grows for those lacking legal status, with individuals like Sergio Perez voicing that they might have to leave the only place they call home if family members face deportation. "It’s like you are in someone’s house and you don’t feel welcome," he remarks, capturing a sentiment felt by countless residents.
This unsettling climate of fear not only impacts immigrants but also threatens Kenner's diverse community fabric, as local leaders and officials face the challenge of maintaining peace while navigating federal jurisdiction over immigration policies.
